I actually think that I preferred the Soto-zen at Sojiji because the dark room and position facing the wall helped me focus much more on my meditation.(This is my expeiemce. I recommend to practice both of them. It is depend on the person.) While both Rinzai and Soto are both forms zazen, they are still very different. I definitely believe that it is a personal preference on which is better suited for a person, and I would greatly suggest to foreigners that they try both types of. With regard to Japanese Rinzai and Soto there are differences — not so much in the Chinese forms of Zen (Ch. Chan). Rinzai puts the emphasis on direct intuition (dhyana) of one's Buddha-nature while Soto preaches zazen (sitting Zen) in the faith that the practitioner is already a Buddha. Zazen is then the natural unfolding of one's Buddha nature Both Rinzai and Soto Zen Buddhists study koans and practice Zazen. The differences are in the relative importance in day-to-day practice. To say Rinzai stresses koans over Zazen would be inaccurate. It is accurate to say that Soto Zen considers the practice of Zazen to be the sole means of realization. But Soto Zen has never discarded the koan. Soto teachers lecture on koans and their students study koans outside the practice of Zazen. Soto Zen practices Zazen as awakening itself to the.

  4. Soto is the passive hand of Zen, Rinzia the active hand. Soto says you are already already Buddha, so just sit and let your nature come forth. Do nothing, know nothing, make absolutely no effort. But I have to do something, don't I. I can't just sit here. Doing nothing is doing something. There is a trap here. What to do? Rinzai has an answer. See the trap. That's what Zen Koans are all about, and Rinzai is both sitting and solving koans. So what is koan but a the double-bind of having.
  5. Lots and lots of meditation. One difference is that Soto sits looking at a wall, and Rinzai sits looking at the center of the room. Soto has slow walking meditation, Rinzai has fast walking meditation. The form is slightly different

The Soto approach is to sit around and do absolutely nothing, (the self gets bore and leaves) whilst the Rinzai approach is to f#*k with ones mind (the self becomes so confused it eventually packs up and leaves). Soto and Rinzai are just Zen schools, bv the way. The former focuses on zazen (sitting), whereas the latter, Rinzai, focuses more on riddles (ko'ans) I cannot go into detail as that's all I know (just basics). Many of the differences I have found between Rinzai and Soto Zen have to do with practice, although I was not able to find any information on philosophical differences between the schools. Hoping someone with more knowledge on the subject could provide some information on this

The most important differences between the two schools have to do with their style of meditation and ideas surrounding the attainment of enlightenment. Soto takes a more gradual approach - kind of like a flower opening. And Rinzai put emphasis on practice to attain enlightenment, you know. If we have buddha-nature, like Sōtō student says, why is it necessary [laughs] to attain enlightenment? And usually, you know, people understand that we have buddha-nature means that potentially we have buddha-nature.
